Interested in learning the Tarot? If you’re a beginner to the Tarot, here’s a few different things you might want to do.
Picking A Tarot Deck
First thing you need is a tarot deck. Most beginners start with the Rider-Waite deck, but I never did. I picked decks that resonated with me- my first was Legend: The Arthurian Tarot, by Anna-Marie Ferguson, a wonderful mystical deck steeped in the Arthurian myths.
As at the time, I was studying Le Morte d’Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory in university, I was able to really get into the deeper significance and allusions made by Ferguson in every card. It was a truly inspired work, and showed me the power and beauty that was to be found in the tarot. To experience the deck in a computerised reading, visit Llewellyn’s website.
The rest is history
But that’s what I mean. Find a deck that emotionally connects with you and that’s the beginning of a wonderful journey in understanding yourself and the miracle of life around us.
A good place to buy tarot decks online is the House of Tarot, which offers free shipping:
Learning to Read:
The internet is full of resources on how to read the tarot, and some of them are incredibly detailed and comprehensive. The trick is to be able to wade through all the text and pick out useful and accurate information.
Aeclectic Tarot is the best place on the internet to get deck and book reviews, and they have a wonderful, vibrant forum with users sharing their readings and interpretations. The only thing is that quite a lot of the discussions are for advanced readers of the tarot, which can be confusing for a beginner trying to get grounded in the basics.

Aeclectic Tarot: Tarot Cards, Readings, eBooks & Info
There are plenty of good books on the tarot for sale in the book stores and through the various publishers, but I thought I’d recommend the excellent new e-book “Empress Tarot” by a friend of mine, Philly Butler.
The reason why I like this book is because it’s so well-designed and easy to read. It carries a detailed page explaining the background and interpretation for every tarot card in the Major Arcana.

It also shows you a variety of spreads to use for different types of questions, which all come with sample readings so you can see how it’s done.

Of course, what differentiates this book from a lot of other things on the internet is that it cuts out a lot of mumbo-jumbo typical of internet agencies trying to sell you into expensive tarot readings by their “psychics”. So if you’re a beginner, do try out “Empress Tarot” as a sensible and helpful companion to your study of the Tarot, accompanied by research on the Internet.
I wish you a wonderful journey of discovery.
